Lynda Minter

My work is stimulated by the power of the river and a long connection with the British Landscape both urban and rural and its many seasons. She aims to make images which have a life of their own.  She does not paint pictures to a system or a formula. Lynda is striving to find a personal response.

Influences are Soutine and Kokoschka  for expressiveness and Bomberg for structure.

My London paintings are inspired by my walks and trips along the river. Excited by a working and evolving river, construction sites, colourful cranes. I draw rapidly having developed a visual shorthand of mark making in my sketchbook which I refer to on many occasions.

Visits to Scotland and other rural areas I approach the landscape on small oil panels painted directly and rapidly,  capturing the atmosphere with expressive brushstrokes.

When back in the studio I rely on my memory and imagination . A piece of music or a quote from literature can also play an important part in the work.

Big brushes, lots of paint,  painting instinctively, letting go, reworking. Taking risks. Allowing  the paint to take a life of its own. Working on several canvases at the same time. The work is finished when it gives me back an emotional response – and is finished.
